The Phi Kappa Phi chapter at the University of Mississippi held its spring initiation ceremony at the Gertrude Castellow Ford Center for the Performing Arts, welcoming 152 new student members and 8 new faculty members into the honor society.
In addition to the initiation, the chapter organized a food drive to benefit Grove Grocery, a food pantry that provides nutritious food and hygiene products free of charge to university students and employees in need. The idea of pairing the event with a food drive stemmed from discussions at the last national Phi Kappa Phi conference, where it was believed inductees would eagerly support such an initiative. The chapter received generous donations, including hundreds of pounds of food and dollars.
AmeriCorps students from the Center for Excellence in Literacy Instruction assisted with organizing the drive, allowing Phi Kappa Phi members to focus on attending the ceremony.
“We were delighted by the response, and we plan to continue the food drives in the future,” said Debora Wenger, public relations officer for the Ole Miss chapter. Although no specific goal was set for donations, the chapter was pleased with the outcome and the support from inductees and the broader campus community.
New inductee Emory Reinhard said, “It’s easy to forget that there are people who go to school who may need support, and it’s good to just help out wherever you can.” Another inductee, Zoe Bigham, shared her personal connection to the cause, having started her own nonprofit organization, “Zoe’s Closet,” as a teenager.
The food drive, combined with the initiation ceremony, highlighted Phi Kappa Phi’s commitment to academic excellence and serving the community.
