Katherine Alosno, an international affairs and philosophy major at Florida State University, has always been passionate about exploring the world. From a young age, she sailed with her family across the Caribbean and Mediterranean, which sparked her fascination with different cultures, ecosystems, and communities. However, as she advanced in her academic career, Alosno noticed a lack of cross-cultural awareness among many of her peers, which motivated her to encourage others to step outside their comfort zones and embrace global experiences.
Alosno’s academic and professional focus is on human rights, Bahasa Indonesia, and multi-lateral partnerships between governments or non-governmental organizations (NGOs), with the goal of advancing foreign policy, human rights, and cross-cultural understanding. Her interest in Indonesia, initially inspired by the country’s natural beauty, soon expanded into a deeper exploration of U.S.-Indonesian relations, particularly in terms of diplomacy and human rights.
This past summer, Alosno participated as a Fellow in The United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) Summer Studies Program, the largest bi-lateral NGO between the United States and Indonesia. Through this experience, Alosno was able to study Bahasa Indonesia, the country’s history, politics, and culture, and gain insight into contemporary Indonesian issues and NGOs. She views this experience as an essential step toward her future career in cultural diplomacy, aiming to foster stronger U.S.-Indonesian ties through cross-cultural conversations.
Phi Kappa Phi played a key role in funding Alosno’s study abroad experience in Indonesia. As a recipient of the society’s Study Abroad Grant, Alosno was able to participate in the USINDO Summer Studies Program, where she studied Bahasa Indonesia and gained valuable insight into U.S.-Indonesian relations.
Alosno says, "While learning is a life-long journey, every piece of cultural awareness creates space for cultural sensitivity – an important skill set and knowledge base to have when working with others, teaching others, and serving your community." Her time in Indonesia was significant in furthering her goals of building understanding between the U.S. and Indonesia.
Phi Kappa Phi is currently accepting applications for its Study Abroad Grants. Seventy-five $1,000 grants are awarded each year to members and non-members. Will you be the next recipient? The deadline to apply is March 15. Learn more at www.phikappaphi.org/studyabroad.
