Graduate Fellowships Available September 2008!

Fellowship

Every year, the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi awards sixty Fellowships of $5,000 each and forty Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.

Named Fellowships

Slater Fellow
In awarding the Slater Fellow, preference is given to the top applicant whose undergraduate field is in the biological sciences.

2009 Winner
This year’s Slater Fellow is James J. Gholson, who is pursuing a Biomedical Science at Southeast Missouri State University, #260.  Mr. Gholson has an impressive record of service at the university and in the community. He has been accepted to medical school.
 
Yoerger Presidential Fellow
The Yoeger Presidential Fellowship is awarded each year to a student in one of the basic science disciplines (i.e., engineering, agriculture) rather than law or medicine.
2009 Winner
Nicholas Vandal, who is majoring in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the United States Naval Academy (chapter #196), is this year’s Yoerger Fellow.  He plans to pursue advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Kathleen Greey Fellow
Preference for the Greey Fellowship is given to one of the top-ranking nominee whose undergraduate field is other than the basic sciences.
2009 Winner
This year’s Greey Fellow is Jon Chachula, an International Relations and Spanish major at the United States Military Academy, #204.  He plans to study International Relations and receive a Masters in Philosophy.

Ruth E. Brasher Fellow
The Ruth E. Brasher Fellowship is awarded to the nominee from chapter #058 (Brigham Young University) should that nominee be chosen as a Fellowship recipient. If there is no Fellowship recipient from this chapter, preference will be given to a recipient whose record of service is exceptional and/or whose undergraduate major is domestic and family science, should there be one.
2009 Winner
This year’s Ruth E. Brasher Fellow is Angela M. Fischer, who is majoring in Public Relations at Brigham Young University, #058.  She will pursue a master’s degree in International Communication.

Marjorie Schoch Fellow
The Marjorie Schoch Fellow is awarded to a top ranking nominee.
2009 Winner
This year’s Marjorie Schoch Fellow is Victoria Davis, is pursuing a degree in International Studies/Political Science at Elon University, #275.  Her graduate plans include earning a Ph.D. in political science.

Alfred M. Wolfe Fellow
The Alfred M. Wolfe is awarded in his memory to a top ranking nominee majoring in Agriculture, Classical Latin/Ancient Greek, or English.
2009 Winner
Sarah L. Martin, who is majoring in Economics and English at the University of Florida, #007, is this year’s Alfred M. Wolfe Fellow.  She plans to pursue a Jurist Doctorate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law where she was accepted in 2008 but deferred for one year to accept the Fulbright fellowship.
 
Walter and Adelheid Hohenstein Fellows
The Hohenstein Fellow is awarded to a top ranking nominee in each of the 5 regions: Northeast, Southeast, North Central, South Central, Western, and 1 recipient from the University of Maryland (if any).
2009 Winners
University of Maryland: Elizabeth Jensen, who is double majoring in Biochemistry and Psychology and minoring in Neuroscience, is this year’s Hohenstein Fellow from the University of Maryland, #022.  She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Neuroscience and Molecular Biophysics.

Northeastern Region: Sara E. Fridinger, who is majoring in Biology with a minor in Psychology at Villanova University, #169, is this year’s Hohenstein Fellow for the Northeastern Region.  She plans to attend Medical School.

Southeastern Region: Diana Gliga, who is majoring in Biology with minors in Art and Spanish Certification at East Carolina University, #114, is this year’s Hohenstein Fellow for the Southeastern Region.  She plans to study Pharmaceutics.

North Central Region: Anne E. Rivas, who is majoring in Integrative Biology and Animal Sciences at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, #046, is this year’s Hohenstein Fellow for the North Central Region.  She plans to earn a doctorate in veterinary medicine.

South Central Region: Justin E. Poelma, who is majoring in Polymer Science with minors in Mathematics, Chemistry and Religion at the University of Southern Mississippi, #099, is this year’s Hohenstein Fellow for the South Central Region.  He plans to study Materials Science and Engineering in graduate school.
 
Western Region: Kevin T. Chang, a Biological Science major with a minor in Medical Anthropology at the University of Southern California, #036, is this year’s Hohenstein Fellow for the Western Region.  He plans to attend Medical School.
