Phi Kappa Phi Forum Magazine Receives Prestigious Publication Awards

The Phi Kappa Phi Forum magazine recently won a Grand Award for Writing, the highest award category, from APEX for the "Is the Sky Falling" issue (Winter/Spring 2006).

"A superbly written, objective review makes an intensely polarizing topic both understandable and interesting," noted one of the APEX judges.

Additionally, the Society's electronic magazine, the Honor Cord, received an Award of Excellence in the category of "Magazines & Journals - Web & Electronic."

APEX 2007--the 19th Annual Awards for Publication Excellence--is an international competition that recognizes outstanding publications from newsletters and magazines to annual reports, brochures, and Web sites.

APEX awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the success of the entry--in the opinion of the judges--in achieving overall communications effectiveness and excellence.

The "Is the Sky Falling?" issue also received the Magnum Opus Bronze Award for Best Cover.

The Magnum Opus acknowledges and rewards every aspect of an internal or external publication's marketing and messaging success in the areas of writing, design, strategy, and management.

University of Texas-Arlington Installs 300th Phi Kappa Phi Chapter

The University of Texas-Arlington made history April 19 by installing the 300th chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society.

"Given what I've learned about Phi Kappa Phi over the past few years, it became clear to me that we have become a sort of institution that embodies the principles behind Phi Kappa Phi," said David Silva, Ph.D., linguistics chair at the university and chartering member of the 300th chapter.

UT-Arlington, according to Silva, offers educational opportunities in a range of disciplines at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, a trait representative of Phi Kappa Phi's existence as an all-discipline honor society.

Those in attendance include UT-Arlington President James Spaniolo and Provost Dana Dunn, both who were initiated into the Society during the ceremony. Gilbert Fowler, Ph.D., Phi Kappa Phi's south central region vice president, represented Phi Kappa Phi's Board of Directors.

"It's most fitting that the University of Texas at Arlington validates its commitment to excellence by becoming the 300th chapter of Phi Kappa Phi during its Honors Convocation Week in 2007," said Fowler. "Its provost, president, and Phi Kappa Phi founding members are committed to making Phi Kappa Phi an organization that truly reaches all disciplines and lives up to its ideal of recognizing excellence."

The UT-Arlington chapter will hold its first initiation ceremony in the fall.

"I feel that a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi on campus not only confirms what we have achieved as an institution," said Silva, "but also provides UT-Arlington with yet another means of promoting academic excellence, thereby moving us closer to where we want to be in the future."
